Overview
In Singapore, over 7 million tonnes of waste are generated annually. The National Environment Agency (NEA) has been actively pushing for a cleaner and more sustainable Singapore, with a key focus on improving the country's recycling efforts. CTM, as one of NEA's key partners, has been directly involved in these sustainability initiatives through our comprehensive waste management and recycling capabilities.

Closing the Recycling Loop
CTM's role in Singapore's recycling efforts encompasses a variety of essential steps: collection, dismantling, sorting, material recovery, re-manufacturing, and re-using, all of which complete the value cycle. Our extensive capabilities, experience, assets, and investments enable us to cover almost the entire loop, starting with the collection of recyclable waste. This collected waste is then transferred to CTM’s Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), a significant investment demonstrating our commitment to sustainability. These facilities are a rarity in Singapore, and CTM’s ownership of two MRFs positions us as a leader in the recycling industry. One facility focuses on electronic waste (e-waste), while the other handles conventional waste such as paper, cardboard, and plastic. Every day, more than 20,000 kilograms of recyclables are processed in these facilities, where our trained workers meticulously sort and differentiate between recoverable materials and contaminated waste. Annually, CTM recovers approximately 3,500 tonnes of materials, highlighting our significant contribution to the circular economy.
Challenges and Innovations in Recycling
Recycling is inherently complex, particularly due to the high levels of contamination in the waste we receive, which renders much of it non-recyclable. Contaminated waste, unfortunately, cannot be recycled and must be disposed of through conventional means. This presents a significant challenge in maintaining high recycling rates. Despite these challenges, CTM remains committed to finding innovative solutions to enhance our recycling efforts. Our machinery plays a crucial role in efficiently processing the uncontaminated recyclable materials. These machines break down properly sorted materials into smaller sizes that can be reused as production materials. For example, plastic waste is processed into plastic resin, which can then be used by our partners to manufacture new products such as recycled garbage bags. CTM utilises these recycled garbage bags for our waste collection operations, showcasing the practical benefits of a circular economy. This collaborative approach not only highlights the environmental advantages of recycling but also emphasises the long-term societal benefits of sustainable practices. By converting waste into reusable materials, CTM contributes to reducing the environmental footprint and promoting resource efficiency.
Commitment to Sustainability and Community Impact
CTM’s significant investments in recycling infrastructure and technology reflect our unwavering commitment to sustainability. Our Material Recovery Facilities are not just operational hubs but also symbols of our dedication to supporting Singapore's green efforts. By partnering with other entities to process their collected recyclables, we further extend our impact and foster a collaborative approach to waste management. Our partnership with NEA and our substantial role in managing Singapore's recyclables underscore our contribution to the nation's sustainability goals. Through our comprehensive recycling process, and steadfast commitment to sustainability, CTM plays a crucial role in supporting Singapore’s green initiatives towards sustainable future.
